Dr Andrew Coster says the only bright spot is that there are few signs of the RSV respiratory virus that was raging last winter.

High levels of winter illnesses and the resurgence of the Covid wave mean that not only are many members of the community in need of hospital care, but staff are also falling ill.

“We try to work as smart as possible, but nothing about being smart makes up for it being hard, so staff are really under pressure,” says Dr Connolly.

Across the country yesterday, there were 729 Covid cases in hospitals.
