Thunderstorm destroys Enugu radio station, injures journalist

A storm destroyed Family Love FMa private radio station in Enugu State.

PUNCH Metro gathered on Sunday that the incident happened during a downpour in Ngwo in the Enugu North local government area of the state on Saturday.

A station staff member, who confirmed the incident on condition of anonymity, said it was the fourth time lightning had struck the station.

The official said a sports journalist, one Humphrey, was affected by the incident.

He explained that the reporter was off duty but because he lived near the station, he always stayed around until the transmitter was cut off each night.

“He was on air when lightning struck the station. He passed out before being rushed to hospital. But we thank God that he regained his consciousness. He was released on Sunday morning and we give all the glory to God,” he added.

The radio station, which broadcasts on 99.9FM, is located at the top of the Ngwo Hills, Enugu North.

Experts said the location of the transmitter and the station in the same building was a possible cause of the incident.

Station chief Celestine Ugwuanyi confirmed the incident, which he attributed to the rainy season.

He said: “This is not the first time you will have lightning and storm damage broadcast equipment. We’re trying to fix it and hopefully we’ll be back on the air tomorrow (Monday) all things being equal. And those who said that a member of staff was affected, yes, but it was minor; he’s fine now.
