Manakitanga and whanaungatanga are the mood for this year’s Commonwealth Games 2022.

Manakitanga and whanaungatanga are the vibes of this year’s Commonwealth Games 2022.

This is the word of journalist Jodi Ihaka of the Marae program of TVNZ who is in Birmingham to cover the event.

New Zealand have so far won 24 medals – 13 gold, 7 silver and 4 bronze – and dominated the cycling and swimming events to secure third place overall.

Ms Ihaka says that since arriving in England she has noticed a strong bond between the athletes.

“Everyone said ‘you have your back’, ‘we’re here to support you, ‘great job.’ They all seem quite capable of giving each other that tautoko because not every family can be here. There’s definitely a great manaakitanga vibe,” she says.
