The nurses’ organization complains that student nurses are called upon to perform hospital duties normally performed by qualified nurses.

Kaiwhakahaere Kerri Nuku says that due to a chronic understaffing at Dunedin Hospital, students have been asked to do patient monitoring work, in exchange for a $200 supermarket voucher.

She says it exposed them to unacceptable risk without any of the legal protections they would have enjoyed as employees.

“You don’t know what you don’t know. So sometimes you can’t anticipate whether something is a risk or not and that puts them in a very vulnerable position,” says Ms. Nuku.

She says the government needs to admit there is a crisis and say how it is dealing with it.

Department of Health Deputy Director General John Whaanga said that although the hospital system is under severe pressure, the use of student nurses was an innovative and safe response.
