Sierra Leone: IMC investigates attack on radio station by C4c SAA Emmerson Lamina

The Independent Media Commission (IMC) has opened an investigation into the alleged attack on Citizen Radio by the leader of the Coalition for Change (C4C) party in Parliament, Hon. Saa Emerson Lamina.

On Saturday, September 3, 2022, at around 9:30 p.m., Citizen Radio management hosted a paid broadcast by C4C national and district executives and during the broadcast, one of the panelists, Sahr Nyama, mentioned the name of the hon. Lamina while explaining their party’s developments regarding the recent court withdrawal which has brought unity among them.

SLAJ National General Secretary, Alhaji Manika Kamara said that to ensure fairness and balance, the program moderator, Ibrahim Tamba Fanday contacted Hon. Lamina to respond to some complaints.

He said that even though it was a paid C4C program, Fanday allowed Hon. Lamina will answer for more than 20 minutes by mobile phone.

“Beyond that, he explained that the line had broken down and so they continued with the chat program. Moments later, the Honorable Lamina and his crew of young men stormed the radio station and shut down the program,” he said.

He said the Hon. Lamina demanded that he be given more time to respond inside the studio, from where chaos and the police and military had to be called in to rescue the panelists, radio staff and moderator.

“As a statutory media regulatory institution with a mandate to promote a free and pluralistic media industry throughout Sierra Leone; and also, to protect the interests of the public against exploitation or abuse by media institutions in accordance to the IMC Law 2020 (Law No. 5 of 2020), the Commission wishes to inform the public that it has opened a formal investigation into the matter, and the public will be informed accordingly of the outcome of the investigation,” reads a press release from IMC.
