A corrections official said the department will try to learn from the incident at Hawke’s Bay Regional Jail’s youth wing, where six rangatahi spent Monday night and half the following day.

Chief of Guard Neil Beales said a review would look at whether there were systemic, procedural or human failings involved.

He says it looks like the six went up to the roof after a disagreement over access to a sports area.

“What this looks like is an issue that the boys probably reacted to in a way that they shouldn’t have and they overreacted to this and got to a point where, you know what it’s with young men, they feel they can ‘not back down or lose face,’ Mr Beales says.

He says the prison team did a great job of resolving the situation without harming inmates or staff, and the six are now safely back in custody.
