Former Labor MP and first New Zealand MP Shane Jones said Hamilton West MP Gaurav Sharma does not seem to understand how parliament works.

Dr Sharma was suspended from caucus yesterday after what Prime Minister Jacinda Arden described as “repeated breaches of trust”, with his path back depending on the results of a review and mediation.

The first-term MP published a newspaper article and social media posts last week claiming there was rampant bullying in parliament.

Ms Ardern says several staff members had complained about her management, but Dr Sharma turned down offers of coaching, mentoring and temporary staff.

Mr Jones says Dr Sharma is highly educated, but taking the side out of a sense of frustration or entitlement does not work.

“When you spend nine years like some Labor in opposition, it’s nine long miserable years. Miserable in that you can’t implement the policies you fought for and have to chip away at the regime that holds power. So whoever comes in and expects to have an easy ride, they should never have gone into politics,” he says.

Mr Jones says Gaurav Sharma represents a beacon seat, and he must remember the word which originally referred to a castrated ram.
